Building a Productive Framework for Sustainable Business

by Carmen in News

Global leaders have gathered at the United Nations in New York City this week for the 72nd Annual United Nations General Assembly. Over 100 Heads of State are joining the United Nations’ main, deliberative and policy-making conference on global issues ranging from disarmament, migration, climate change, and healthcare. While politicians promote their agendas and practice diplomacy, business leaders are meeting at the Global Compact Leaders Summit to find solutions to some of the world’s most significant challenges.

The rapid depletion of natural resources,

rising inequality and the threat of intensifying climate change are global grand challenges that not only compromise humankind’s future prosperity but also risk reversing human progress. The United Nations Global Compact has therefore gathered an international community of leaders from business, civil society, academia, and government to achieve sustainable development. Businesses have a profound role to play in the realization of a sustainable future. Aligning corporate strategies with universal principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption, these corporate stakeholders mobilize capital to end poverty, eradicate hunger and ensure healthy lives around the world.

Setting ambitious targets that achieve economic growth alongside sustainable development will ensure the discovery of breakthrough ideas, disrupt business-as-usual mentalities and unlock $12 trillion in new business opportunity. More than 13,000 organizations from all over 160 countries have joined the United Nations Global Compact under this shared objective and significant progress has been made since inception. More sophisticated approaches to integrating sustainability into core business strategies are occurring around the world and these initiatives are being treated more strategically and at a higher level than ever before. Even so, the gap between intention and action remains substantial. 1/3 of Global Compact members haven’t set any sustainability targets and only 55% monitor the progress of their initiatives. The main objectives of the Leaders Summit will be to make global goals local business and establish a standard methodology for measuring progress that can be applied across industries.
